What size studwork to use?

Our structural setting out provides for a 96mm stud thickness (excluding plasterboard) which should result in a nominal 125mm overall wall thickness including 2no 12.5mm sheets plasterboard.
100 x 50mm timber stud - Planed All Round (PAR) stud usually ends up being approx 96 x 45mm post machining

Can I use metal stud?

Yes, but it will likely need to be timber infilled to provide appropriate strength and achieve suitable screw fixing, especially at the head where the track moount and track affix. It also may need to be packed out if it's less that 96mm wide

What if I've got underfloor heating?

Great care should be taken to ensure any screws fitted into the floor do not conflit with any services which are located in the floor.

Can I complete the entire build and hang the doors later?

Typically the door is bigger than the clear opening, this dictactes that it must be hung before the second side of the jambs and head sections are installed. After the hanging of the door, ensure the end stop is positioned in the correct location before closing up the pocket.

Can I fit cabinets or tile on the pocket walls?

The Pocket area should only have the plasterbooard affixed into it. The plasterboard sheet should also be fixed to the wall structure around the pocket. The Pocket area is not designed to have additional items hung from it, for example, cabinets, cupboards or radiators. If such items are to be affixed then the wall should be built out with a structurally suitable frame for the items being fitted. Whilst the pocket area can be tiled it is usual that the tiled wall is also reinforced with suitable substrate boarding to increase rigidity and for suitability for tile adhesive.

fr KITS - BuilT against an EXISTING brickwork WALL?

Yes this is permissable, the internal layers of plaster board that abut the brick wall are not required as long as it's brickwork and not a party wall. Access to the wall side screws in the z section to the sole plate and track mount will not be possible on both sides, which dictates the system needs to be built on the floor and offered up to the brickwork wall and attached.

Finished floor level and packing out the T guide to expected FFL

Irrespective of the floor build up the top "fin" of the T Guide must locate in the U channel fitted into the bottom edge of the door. If additional flooring materials are being fitted, and the height of the door is changed to compensate then the height of the T guide may also have to be modified for it to continue to function.

Overlap dimensions and how to ensure the door looks central when closed?

Once installed, when the door is in the closed position some of the door remains recessed behind the closing jamb, head jamb and in the pocket, meaning that some of the door face is not visible (this will be different for single and double doors and also different between kit types). This is of particular importance for doors with decorative features on the face, what are generally called feature doors. With such doors it is usual to modify, for example, the stiles and rails to accommodate these recess overlaps to ensure that when the door is closed the features, such as stiles/rails are visually consistent. Typically when Portman supply a feature door, the features will be offset to accommodate for the kit the door is being installed in.

Finished wall thickness – can I make thicker?

For Non fire rated systems they have a finished wall thickness of 125mm. FR30 systems are 150mm thick. As long as the installation instructions are followed correctly sacrafical layers can be added to achieve an increased wall thickness.

General questions

Can I use my own hardware?

For non fire rated you are unresctricted to what hardware you can use. For FD30 Recessed pull handles are limited to a maximum size of 250 x 250mm and may be recessed into the leaf by a maximum of 12mm with no intumescent protection or by a maximum of 20mm, as long as they are bedded on minimum 1mm thick non-pressure forming intumescent material.

Compatibility of accessories, soft close with simultaneous operation

Due to the weight of the combined doors as well as the increased load that simulteous kits create, simulteous opening is not compatiable with soft/self closers, touch latches.

General questions

Rough running doors - Maintenance of the track & running gear

If the door operation is not running smoothly then the first thing to check is obstruction or damage to the runnsing surfaces in the track, during building works this area can become contaminted with plaster and/or dust and debris. We recommend this be checked and wiped down or a blast of compressed air through the track to clear any debris. If the door has run on contaminated or damaged track then this may have resulted in damage to the wheels; these should also be checked for damage or deformation.

Destructive access? if I want to remove my door

The nature of pocket doors dictacts the door leaf is larger than the clear opening which means that gaining access to the hanging brackets to release the door will involve removing the architrave, plasterboard, and timber trims.

Acoustic ratings

Indicative testing has shown that on average our pocket doors achieve around 25 dB.

What if my pocket has a bow in it

Ensuring that the installation is plumb and square is of paramount importance. Our Technical Support Team is on hand to help identify and contributing factors that maybe have had an impact on the operation of the door.

Fire doors

Do I have to buy your doors or can I supply my own?
(potential certification issues that may arise)

For FD30 and feature doors it is advised Portman Pocket Doors design and supply this to ensure FD compliance and the feature details are correctly proportioned.

Smoke rating

Smoke rating ins not included in our Field of Application report.

Are flush pulls screwed or glued in

Either or for both FD30 & Non fire application. For FD30 the permissable adhesives are AckroBond M60, Safe fix FR 300, which portman can supply.

How to wire up an electro mag

Wiring diagrams / fitting inxtructions are supplied with the units. However our technical support team is on hand.

Is a telescopic fire rated

No telescopic is not fire rated.

How to install intumescent pads

We have a YouTube channel which show how to apply each intumescent pad to our hardware range of products.

Can I adapt an FD30 set out to fit in with my requirements

Yes as long as the installation is carried out inline with the fitting instructions and drawings.

What if I want to convert a standard kit into a FR kit?

Its possible but please discuss your specific project requirements with our Technical Team.
